What are the three types of adult honey bees in a colony?
A colony contains one queen in normal circumstances, thousands of female workers, and seasonally hundreds or thousands of male drones. Each caste has a different body form and role.
What stages make up the honey bee life cycle?
Honey bees undergo complete metamorphosis through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is open brood; the pupal stage develops beneath a wax capping.
How long does a honey bee egg take to hatch?
About three days. A healthy queen normally places one rice-grain-sized egg in each brood cell.
How long does a worker bee take to emerge?
A European honey bee worker typically emerges about 21 days after the egg is laid.
How long does a queen take to emerge?
A European honey bee queen develops fastest, emerging roughly 15–16 days after the egg is laid.
How long does a drone take to emerge?
A drone takes about 24 days from egg to adult emergence—the longest development period of the three castes.
How long does a worker honey bee live?
UF/IFAS gives a range of about six weeks to six months. Busy summer workers often live only several weeks, while workers produced for less active periods can live much longer.
How long does a queen honey bee live?
Queens commonly live two to three years, although a queen can live longer. Her egg-laying productivity usually declines before her maximum biological lifespan.
How do fertilized and unfertilized eggs differ?
Fertilized eggs develop into females—workers or queens. Unfertilized eggs develop into male drones, so a drone has a mother but no father.
What determines whether a female larva becomes a queen or worker?
Nutrition is the key difference. Future queens are raised in special queen cells and receive royal jelly throughout larval development; worker larvae switch to other brood food after their first days.
What is brood?
Brood is the collective term for developing eggs, larvae, and pupae. Open brood includes eggs and uncapped larvae; capped brood contains developing prepupae and pupae.
Do all honey bees have stingers?
No. Workers and queens are female and have stingers derived from an egg-laying structure. Male drones do not have stingers.
Are worker bees male or female?
Workers are female. They usually do not reproduce, but they perform nearly all of the daily work that keeps the colony alive.
Do workers keep one job for their entire lives?
No. Workers usually move through overlapping tasks as they age, a pattern called age-related division of labor. Colony needs can cause bees to shift jobs earlier or later.
What does a newly emerged worker do?
Young workers begin with in-hive duties such as cleaning cells and helping maintain the brood area. Clean cells are needed for new eggs and food storage.
What is a nurse bee?
A nurse is a young worker that feeds and tends developing larvae. Specialized glands produce royal jelly and other brood food.
What is a queen attendant?
Queen attendants are workers that surround the queen, feed and groom her, remove waste, and help distribute her pheromones through the colony.
How do workers make beeswax?
Wax-producing workers secrete small wax scales from glands on the underside of the abdomen, then shape those scales into comb.
What does a guard bee do?
Guard workers patrol the entrance, inspect incoming bees by scent, and help defend the colony from intruders and robbing bees.
What is a forager bee?
A forager is an older worker that leaves the hive to collect nectar, pollen, water, or plant resins used to make propolis.
How do foragers carry pollen?
Branched body hairs collect pollen. Workers groom it into pollen baskets, called corbiculae, on their hind legs and carry it back to the hive.
How do honey bees communicate food locations?
Foragers use dances, odors, and food samples. The waggle dance communicates the direction and approximate distance of a profitable resource.
What is the queen’s main role?
The queen is the colony’s primary reproductive female. She lays eggs and produces pheromones that help organize colony behavior and signal her presence.
How many eggs can a queen lay?
Under strong conditions, a productive queen may lay up to about 2,000 eggs in a day. Actual output changes with colony strength, nutrition, weather, and season.
Does the queen control the hive?
Not like a human ruler. Her pheromones strongly influence the colony, but workers collectively make many decisions about feeding, comb use, swarming, and queen replacement.
What is a drone?
A drone is a male honey bee produced from an unfertilized egg. Drones are larger and rounder than workers, with very large eyes adapted for locating queens in flight.
What is a drone’s role?
A drone’s primary biological role is to mate with a queen from another colony, contributing genetic diversity to future workers and queens.
How long do drones live?
UF/IFAS lists a typical lifespan of about two to four months. A drone that successfully mates dies immediately afterward.
Why do drones have such large eyes?
Drones must locate fast-flying virgin queens in open-air mating areas, so their large compound eyes provide a wide field of view.
Do drones collect nectar or pollen?
No. Drones lack pollen baskets and do not forage for colony food. Workers feed them or they take food stored in the hive.
Why are drones sometimes pushed out of a hive?
When resources become scarce or the mating season ends, workers may evict drones to conserve stored food for the queen and worker population.
How does a queen mate?
A virgin queen takes one or more mating flights and mates in the air with multiple drones. She stores sperm in an organ called the spermatheca and uses it over her laying life.
Why might a colony replace its queen?
Workers may supersede a queen when her pheromone signal or laying performance declines. They may also raise queens for swarming or as an emergency response to queen loss.
Is one honey bee a colony?
No. A honey bee colony is a social unit made up of the queen, workers, drones when present, brood, comb, and stored food. Individuals depend on the colony to survive.
How many bees live in a colony?
Population varies greatly by season and colony health. A strong colony can contain tens of thousands of adults during a major buildup.
What is a swarm?
Swarming is natural colony reproduction. The old queen leaves with many workers to seek a new nest while the original colony raises or retains a new queen.
Why do bees cluster?
Workers cluster to conserve heat, protect the queen, or surround her temporarily during a swarm. In cool weather they generate heat by contracting flight muscles.
How do bees cool a hot hive?
Workers collect water, spread droplets, and fan their wings to create evaporative cooling and ventilation.
What is propolis?
Propolis is a sticky material made from plant resins. Bees use it to seal small gaps, smooth surfaces, and help maintain a sanitary nest environment.
What is bee bread?
Bee bread is stored pollen mixed with nectar or honey and bee secretions. It supplies protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals used especially to feed developing brood.
Why are hexagonal cells useful?
Closely packed hexagons create a strong, space-efficient comb with shared walls. Cells hold brood, pollen, nectar, and ripe honey.
How do bees make honey?
Foragers collect flower nectar and pass it among workers. Bees add enzymes and evaporate water until the concentrated honey is stored and capped with wax.
Why do honey colors and flavors vary?
Nectar sources, season, location, and storage conditions influence honey’s color, aroma, and flavor. Natural variation is expected in local honey.
Does real honey crystallize?
Yes. Crystallization is a natural physical change influenced by the honey’s sugar balance, temperature, and pollen content; it does not by itself mean the honey has spoiled.
How should honey be stored, and how can crystallized honey be made liquid again?
Keep honey tightly sealed in a clean container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high heat. If it crystallizes, place the container in warm-to-the-touch water and warm it gently until the crystals dissolve, stirring if practical. Do not boil or overheat the honey, and do not add water to the jar.
What is the difference between strained and filtered honey?
Strained honey is passed through mesh to remove most pieces of beeswax, propolis, and other extraction debris while pollen, tiny air bubbles, and very fine particles may remain. Filtered honey is processed more finely so that all or most of those suspended particles and pollen grains are removed. People sometimes call minimally strained honey “unfiltered,” but Bee To Z uses the more precise description unpasteurized and lightly strained rather than ultra-filtered.
Is filtered honey better than strained or unfiltered honey?
Neither style is automatically better. Filtered honey is usually clearer and may remain liquid longer because more suspended particles have been removed. Lightly strained honey retains more of the honey’s natural pollen and fine particles, but it may look less uniform or crystallize sooner. The better choice depends on whether you value clarity and consistency or minimal processing and natural batch variation.
What does unpasteurized honey mean?
Unpasteurized honey has not received the higher-heat treatment used to pasteurize some commercial honey. Avoiding high heat helps preserve the honey’s original aroma, flavor, and heat-sensitive components, although unpasteurized honey may crystallize sooner. Unpasteurized does not mean unstrained; Bee To Z honey is unpasteurized and lightly strained to remove pieces of wax from extraction.
Is pasteurized honey better than unpasteurized honey?
Not in every situation. Pasteurization can reduce yeasts, make bottling easier, and delay crystallization, which helps large batches remain clear and consistent. Higher heat can also change honey’s aroma, color, flavor, and some heat-sensitive components. Pasteurization is useful for processing and shelf consistency, while unpasteurized honey appeals to customers who prefer less processing and more natural seasonal variation.
Can infants eat pasteurized or unpasteurized honey?
No. Do not give any honey to a child younger than 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. This warning applies to both pasteurized and unpasteurized honey.
Can local honey prevent or treat seasonal allergies?
Scientific evidence is limited and inconsistent, and local honey has not been established as a reliable treatment for seasonal allergies. Bee To Z sells honey as food, not as a medical treatment. Enjoy it for its flavor and local character, and consult a qualified healthcare professional about persistent or serious allergy symptoms.
What is cut comb honey?
Cut comb is a section of capped honeycomb sold with the beeswax intact. Both the honey and clean beeswax comb are edible.
Are Bee To Z honey and hive products available year-round?
Not necessarily. As of August 21, 2026, honey and bee pollen are out of stock, and cut comb is sold out. Contact us to request a restock notification.
What will a Bee To Z harvest or batch label tell me?
When Bee To Z honey becomes available, each jar will include a batch or lot identifier tied to its extraction record. Product information may also identify the harvest season and dominant local nectar flow when that origin can be reasonably supported. This improves traceability and helps explain natural differences in color, aroma, flavor, and crystallization. A batch label does not by itself mean the honey came from only one flower source.
Does Bee To Z ship honey?
Honey is primarily handled through local pickup unless another arrangement is confirmed before purchase.
What is a nuc?
A nucleus colony, or nuc, is a small working colony usually sold on several frames with workers, developing brood, food stores, and a laying queen.
When are Bee To Z nucs available?
As of August 21, 2026, Bee To Z nucs are sold out. The next release date has not been announced; contact us to join the next-availability list.
What should be ready before nuc pickup?
Prepare the hive stand, full-size brood box, frames, feeder if needed, entrance reducer, protective gear, and a cool, secure transportation plan.
When are queens available?
As of August 21, 2026, Bee To Z queens are sold out. The next availability window has not been announced; contact us to request a notification.
How is a new queen introduced?
A queen is commonly introduced in a cage so colony odors can blend before release. Confirm the hive is queenless and follow the specific instructions supplied with the queen.
What are signs of a laying queen?
Fresh eggs, young larvae, and a compact worker-brood pattern indicate recent laying. You do not have to see the queen at every inspection if her signs are present.
Why monitor Varroa mites?
Varroa are major honey bee parasites that feed on bees and transmit viruses. They reproduce in capped brood and prefer drone brood when available, so regular monitoring is essential.
How often should a hive be inspected?
Inspection frequency depends on season and colony needs. New colonies and swarm-season hives may need closer attention, while unnecessary opening can disturb the colony.
What is a honey flow?
A honey flow is a period when enough nectar is available that a strong colony gathers more than it immediately consumes and can store a surplus. A plant may feed bees without producing a harvestable surplus, so bloom and honey flow do not always mean the same thing.
When are the main honey flows around Port St. Lucie?
The most dependable buildup is generally spring into early summer, roughly February through June, followed by another important flow in late summer and fall. Exact timing and strength vary with rainfall, temperature, wind, soil moisture, storm damage, colony strength, and what grows within flying distance of each apiary.
What drives the early spring flow?
From about February into March, South Florida’s UF/IFAS bloom calendar lists orange and other citrus, oak, blackberry, beautyberry, coreopsis, sweet clover, Spanish needle, Mexican clover, and primrose willow. Citrus can provide a concentrated nectar source where enough trees remain nearby, while many of the others help colonies build brood and population.
What drives the main spring flow?
March through May commonly brings saw palmetto, gallberry, citrus, buttonwood, seagrape, wild coffee, smartweed, Spanish needle, Mexican clover, and other shrubs and wildflowers. In suitable Treasure Coast habitat, broad stands of palmetto and gallberry can be especially important surplus-producing sources.
When does saw palmetto bloom near the Treasure Coast?
UF/IFAS lists saw palmetto in South Florida beginning around March, and local timing can extend through the spring. Its small cream-colored flower clusters can support a strong flow where large areas of palmetto bloom together.
What supports the late spring and early summer flow?
May and June can include cabbage palm, other palms, gallberry, dahoon holly, buttonwood, seagrape, smartweed, Spanish needle, Mexican clover, wild coffee, and coastal mangroves. Cabbage palm is widespread locally; mangrove contributions are more important where colonies can forage near coastal or estuarine habitat.
Is summer always a nectar dearth?
Not always in South Florida, but midsummer can be uneven. Heat, heavy rain, drought, and gaps between mass blooms can reduce incoming nectar even when scattered flowers are visible. Mexican clover, Spanish needle, primrose willow, palms, buttonweed, smartweed, partridge pea, and coastal plants may provide supporting forage.
What causes the fall honey flow?
Florida often receives a second flow in late summer and fall. Around Port St. Lucie, likely contributors include Brazilian pepper, Spanish needle, goldenrod, asters, Mexican clover, primrose willow, smartweed, and false buttonweed. Brazilian pepper is invasive, but established stands can produce a major nectar pulse where present.
When does Brazilian pepper produce nectar?
Bloom timing varies by site and weather, but Florida guidance identifies Brazilian pepper as an important late-summer and fall nectar source. In South Florida it can produce a strong localized flow, often from late summer into fall, where dense mature plants occur.
What blooms help bees in late fall and winter?
UF/IFAS lists Spanish needle, Mexican clover, primrose willow, and false buttonweed into November, with maple and wild mustard joining winter forage. These blooms may maintain colonies or stimulate early buildup, but winter surplus production is less dependable than the major spring and fall flows.
Why can two nearby apiaries have different honey flows?
Honey bees usually forage across a landscape rather than on one plant. Differences in wetlands, preserves, citrus, palms, canals, mangroves, vacant land, landscaping, mowing, pesticide exposure, and rainfall can make the timing and flavor of each apiary’s honey different.
How can a beekeeper tell that a flow has started?
Signs include increased purposeful flight, fresh white wax, rapid comb building, nectar shining in cells, heavier boxes, and a sweet hive odor. A scale hive or regular weight records give better evidence than bloom observations alone.
Are bloom dates guaranteed every year?
No. UF/IFAS calendars are planning guides, not guarantees for a specific yard. Freezes, drought, heavy rain, hurricanes, mowing, development, and day-to-day weather can shift or shorten blooms and determine whether flowers actually secrete useful nectar.
Do you remove all types of bees?
Bee To Z focuses on honeybee situations. Clear photos help identify the insect and determine the best next step before scheduling.
What should I do if I find a swarm?
Keep people and pets back, do not spray it, and send photos plus the location and approximate height. A resting swarm may move on, but it can often be collected safely.
What is the difference between a swarm and an established colony?
A swarm is a temporary cluster without built comb. An established colony occupies a cavity or structure and has comb, brood, and stored food.
Why should I not seal an active bee entrance?
Sealing bees inside can force them deeper into a building or into occupied rooms. It also leaves comb, honey, and brood behind, which can create odor and pest problems.
How much does bee removal cost?
Pricing depends on whether the bees are a reachable swarm or an established colony, plus height, access, structure type, urgency, and repair needs.
What information helps with a removal estimate?
Send clear photos or video, the property location, entrance height, how long bees have been present, and whether they are entering a wall, roof, soffit, tree, or other cavity.
Are honey bees naturally aggressive?
Honey bees usually sting defensively near their nest or when trapped or threatened. Colony temperament varies, and any unknown colony in Florida should be treated cautiously.
What should I do after a serious sting reaction?
Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, widespread hives, or other signs of anaphylaxis. Use prescribed epinephrine if available and directed.
